Not paying attention to detail

Time and time again,"Does not pay attention to detail" comes up on my annual review, and I've heard it from not this job but my last one too. I even heard it in school. I don't know why I can't pay attention to detail. I don't know why I fuck things up so much. Am I rushing? I KNOW I'm not careless. I do CARE for Christ sake! Eric says I'm "mindless" which might be true ...

In November my boss asked me to get on-line and purchase 3 tickets for her family for Christmas. She, her husband, and her mother want to fly down to Florida for a few days over the holiday. First of all, in order to purchase tickets on USAir.com you have to create an account, which really pisses me off but that's a whole other blog for another day. Per her request I went in and made reservations for my boss and her husband, both departing out of the same airport. For each ticket, because I've created an account, the website automatically puts my name and in to the passenger field. I had to go through and change each and every ticket to reflect not my name, but the passengers name. Well on the 3rd ticket I screwed up and didn't put in my boss's Moms name. So now I have one ticket, paid for on my boss's credit card, in my name. SHIT!

I call the customer service line for the website IMMEDIATELY and the genius who answers the phone says:

Genius: "You're very lucky you called when you did. The ticket has not been issued yet. You can go ahead and purchase another ticket with the correct name on it and I'll take care of this one."

Me: "Do you have some sort of a confirmation number for this cancellation?"

Genius:
"No, there can't be one because the ticket hasn't even been issued yet. You're fine."

Me:
"So if I go online and buy another ticket in the correct name it won't charge me for the one with the incorrect name as well?"

Genius: "Nope!"

So I did just that.

Today my boss comes up to me and says that she didn't know I was traveling to Florida with her and her family and that I need to call USair to take care of the charge.

The ticket was non-refundable. The ticket was non-transferable. I spoke with 5 customer service agents who said nothing but

"Sorry, there's nothing we can do" OR "We can't refund your money, it's policy"

Me: "What do you mean you CAN'T. What if I call American Express and tell them that the charge is wack?"

Customer service: "Well it's not wack. You made a mistake."

Me: "But I did it because you told me to!"

Customer Service:
"You can't get a refund but the refunds department MIGHT be able to credit you, the passenger, for the amount and you can travel somewhere else within a year."

Me: "But I didn't pay for the ticket! Can I speak with your manager?"

Customer Service: "You can. But it won't work. They give us the policy, we give it to you."

Me:
"Well I have to speak with them anyway because when I dispute this with American Express I want to be sure I've taken every step to get the issue resolved with USAir."

Customer Service:
"ooookkkkaaaayyyy...."

So I called and talked to a very friendly manager who honestly seemed to feel sorry for me and agreed to help me in stead of spouting useless policy of which I could not fathom!

Seriously, I was shitting bricks.

I was imagining how I would have to call my parents and say:

Me: "Mom, Dad, I need to borrow $531.31."

Parents: "Why, Jessica?"

Me: "Well. I spent $700 on car repairs this month, and because I don't pay attention to detail, I accidentally purchased a non-refundable plane ticket to Florida to spend the holidays with my boss and her family, and I can't afford to pay for it."

Why would a boss, ANY BOSS, ask YOU to purchase plane tickets for them? If any mistake was made in this process, whether it was your fault or not, it's HER fault for not ordering the tickets herself!!! And why should you be blamed for not paying attention to detail in your employee report for ordering plane tickets, anyway? Was it work related that you were ordering the tickets or just for HER leisure????????

Or are you just too nice and said you'd do it anyway? I need to have a talk with you, sweetie!

Jaq! Take a deep breath!!! I am her assitant. I am the Executive assistant to the president and when she's spending 12 to 15 hours a day working on the anuual budget, which happens to fall at Christmas/Thanksgiving every year, it's a part of my job to ensure that she's able to get things done that she can't get done because of the high demands in her job. I don't mind. I get paid well. =) But thanks for sticking up!

Oh and I have permissions on her credit card. =)

WHOA!!! My fault! Guess I needed more background to what your job entailed!

Holy crap! Permission to use her credit card! Sounds like a plan!

Well basically I can call and talk to Amex about her card and whatnot. Since I make a lot of the purchases on it, and she needs me to go through the bill and expense stuff out...yada yada.... It's not too bad.

You're very sweet for looking out though, J. I think the blame should be on USAir for being so difficult to work with!! For Christ sake - - it's not like the ticket was to hell in the middle of summer. It was to Florida during Christmas -- talk about being able to resell the ticket easily!! Sheesh

No offense but you might in the wrong job. I have trouble paying attention to details and it is keeping me from doing well at my job, which is probably not best for a creative person like myself. Maybe both of us should look for more creative jobs. You obviously like writing, maybe you should explore that.
